Frequently Asked Questions

When should I show up?

Normally the box office opens 30 minutes before the each show. Online tickets are available up to 30 minutes before the scheduled showtime.

Sell-outs can happen for our more popular films, we recommend reserving seats in advance although we do welcome walk-ins at the door. If you are having trouble purchasing tickets, feel free to call the cinema and our staff can reserve your seats with an unpaid booking. There may not be anyone there outside of general showtime hours.

What does it cost?

  • Regular admission is $11.00.
  • Members pay $8.00*
    *On confirmation of valid membership
  • Seniors (65 & over) and Youth (14 & under) pay $8.00

How can I pay?

In-person, we accept  Credit Cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express) and Interac Debit Cards. We are enabled for most touchless payments including Apple Pay.

You can make advance purchases through this website only as soon as showtimes are put on sale. To purchase advance tickets, click on the title of any film on our calendar and follow the instructions to purchase tickets. Advance tickets are available until 30 minutes before screening start.

Do I need a membership to see a movie?

No, anyone can come anytime for regular price. A membership will save you money though, and goes to support The Charlottetown Film Society. Memberships cost $25.00, and are good for one person for a year from the date of purchase.

If you come to City Cinema more than once every two months, you save money. If you come just once every 2 weeks, it adds up to over $50 in savings over a year! Members must show their cards to receive the discount, and cards are not transferrable or replaceable.

Are you wheelchair accessible?

Yes, we have left out the aisle seats on the back row to leave space for two wheelchairs and their companions, and both our King Street and Water Street entrances as well as our washrooms are fully accessible.

Do you have a canteen?

Yes, with arguably the best popcorn in town! We sell fresh popcorn, soda pop, apple and orange juice, iced tea and lemonade, Glosettes, Reece’s, Nibs, and both still and sparkling water.

We are also fully licensed to sell alcohol and have a variety of wines, local beers, spritzers, and hard seltzers available to those who can show ID!

Our popcorn is popped in canola oil, and topped with real butter on request. We also brew a variety of teas and coffees to order.

What do the ratings mean?

You can click on a rating in the film description page to get an explanation of what films with a given rating may contain (you can also click here for information from the Motion Picture Association of Canada).

Please phone us (902-368-3669) if you want more information about the content of any film. There are several websites providing very specific information about film content, including violence, drugs, sex, moral issues, etc. A couple we’ve found are: Kids-In-Mind and Common Sense Media. Be warned, in their thoroughness they often give away plot information.

How long have you been here?

We opened September 28, 1993 with a screening of Strictly Ballroom.

How many seats do you have?

We have 70 seats and two spaces for wheelchairs.

Can I rent the theatre?

City Cinema is available for rentals for private screenings, meetings, etc. Please fill out our Venue Rental Request form for more information.
